Sicily is the ideal destination if you love hot sunshine, deep colours and strong flavours. Spring and autumn can also be great times to go as the island is on the same latitude as the Tunisian coast with a fine climate all year round. Lying in the centre of the Mediterranean, like the gateway between east and west, Sicily was conquered by many of the nations who sailed these seas. All of these peoples left indelible traces of their passing, both on land and in the nature of the inhabitants, so proud and fond of their history. From the Phoenicians to the Greeks who left some of the most representative monuments of their ancient civilization here, to the Romans who used the island as their granary, to the Normans who used it as a bastion for their expansion, to the Arabs who took this piece of Europe lying just off their doorstep. All contributed to making this land a land of contradiction and mystery.
